Service delivery in South African townships and informal settlements (slums) is often perceived as insufficient by residents while municipalities might feel they have provided the prescribed level of service.

About THE data

Administrations may record service levels as equal to the number of installed facilities, but in practice, the functional status and location of those facilities is often an unknown factor. Low functional service levels in one part of a settlement may lead to a severe scarcity of resources which can present safety issues relating to health and violence.

The Community Atlas empowers residents, community stakeholders, municipal officials, NGOs and other interested parties to better understand the people and their needs in order to plan for these communities and advocate for better service delivery using an evidence-driven approach. The Community Atlas seeks to provide an accurate reflection of the land, the people, their lives and the services available to them by presenting both official and contributed data specific to geographical areas, with special emphasis on informal settlements.

The Community Atlas was developed by Violence Prevention through Urban Upgrading (VPUU) in partnership with OpenUp with funding generously made available from Comic Relief and was built on Wazimap, which is based on the amazing Census Reporter and is entirely open source.
